You do not have to type everything again. WikiTree has "extensions" (aka apps) which help you transfer information from Ancestry or FamilySearch to WikiTree. The WikiTree Sourcer is particularly helpful, in my opinion.
Another way not to have to type everything would be to obtain a GEDCOM from Ancestry or FamilySearch to upload here. Ancestry does allow you to download your tree as a GEDCOM, but if it is larger than 5000 individuals, it surpasses the limit WikiTree allows. To split your GEDCOM if it is too large or to extract a GEDCOM from FamilySearch, you will have to use third-party software and you will have to follow the instructions on each of those sites and/or the software for obtaining the GEDCOM.
Your parents may be on WikiTree, but you need to make the link between yourself and them. On your profile, click add father or add mother, click on connect an existing profile then place their WikiTree ID in the blank then click on continue.
No secret handshakes, no bird whistles. This is a really friendly and helpful community. Yes, there is a lot to learn, but with patience and the assistance of others, you will learn to accomplish what you want to accomplish.
