Newt McLaughlin-8928 introducing myself

WikiTree is a total mystery to me. I can't make it work, combine or merge with Ancestry or Family Search. I have found so much misinformation in my Moorman family research here that I have given up anything being accurate. I have a one name tree because I am unable to find anything here to connect to. I added my parents but nothing is available. I can no type alll of the stuff over again. Also, with alll your codes of honor, not finding much cooperation or help. Just saying - spend less and less trying to figure out your bizarre secret handshakes and bird whistles.

With that said what is a a one name McLaughlin tree designation for? The list it sent me to kept spinning despite great internet. Never got any information

and I have no idea why I am labeled NEWT McLaughlin. I find that offensive
NEWT is the term meaning "New to WikiTree."
good information.  The image I had was of a small orange slimy amphibian which is at what I took offense.

You do not have to type everything again. WikiTree has "extensions" (aka apps) which help you transfer information from Ancestry or FamilySearch to WikiTree. The WikiTree Sourcer is particularly helpful, in my opinion.

Another way not to have to type everything would be to obtain a GEDCOM from Ancestry or FamilySearch to upload here. Ancestry does allow you to download your tree as a GEDCOM, but if it is larger than 5000 individuals, it surpasses the limit WikiTree allows. To split your GEDCOM if it is too large or to extract a GEDCOM from FamilySearch, you will have to use third-party software and you will have to follow the instructions on each of those sites and/or the software for obtaining the GEDCOM.

Your parents may be on WikiTree, but you need to make the link between yourself and them. On your profile, click add father or add mother, click on connect an existing profile then place their WikiTree ID in the blank then click on continue.

No secret handshakes, no bird whistles. This is a really friendly and helpful community. Yes, there is a lot to learn, but with patience and the assistance of others, you will learn to accomplish what you want to accomplish.

I have tried those things with no luck. I am picking up pieces and trying to patch them together. One person admitted a typo (listing my ancestors migration to Ohio from VA 10 years before they were born) but still hasn't changed it.
Donald, thanks for the star! I really hope you can get your problems worked out and become comfortable and happy here at WikiTree. It really is worth the effort, as David said.

Hi Donald! Your my 15th cousin! That is amazing after just 20 contributions!wink

When I first started in WikiTree. I was really confused. There is a learning curve. However, stick with it because the dividends are well worth the learning curve.

WikiTree members are very friendly, in my opinion and from what I have experienced. There is even training available for free. In fact, you really should pair up with someone who knows their way around WikiTree. This will get you up to speed in a few hours, not weeks of frustration.wink

heartThanks for introducing yourself, cousin!heart

Queen Elizabeth II was my 10th cousin. Elvis and John Wayne were 8th cousins, each twice removed. 20 is not quite as close but, nice to know. Peace
